Wilderness To Sedgefield: The Best Stops On The N2

Some road trips demand a week and a packing list. This one doesn’t. The stretch of the N2 between Wilderness and Sedgefield is barely 25 kilometres, yet it packs in farm stalls, coastal lookouts and quiet beaches that make the Garden Route famous for all the right reasons. Start Slow In Wilderness

Begin your morning in Wilderness, where the Touw River lagoon meets the sea and the whole town seems to move at half speed. Grab a coffee, then take a stroll along the boardwalk or head up to the Map of Africa viewpoint for a panorama over the Kaaimans River gorge. Farm Stall Stops And Country Detours

Heading west out of Wilderness towards Sedgefield, the N2 climbs through thick indigenous forest before opening onto farmland. This is where the detours earn their keep. Pull over at the farm stalls along the way for fresh produce, homemade jams, biltong and the kind of rusks that ruin shop-bought ones for you forever. The pace here is slow, the prices are fair, and the conversations at the till are part of the experience.

Between the forest and Sedgefield, the coastline keeps revealing itself in glimpses. Swartvlei, Rondevlei and the lakes system around Sedgefield are birders’ territory — bring binoculars if you have them. Then there’s Myoli Beach and Cola Beach, where the crowds thin out fast and you can walk for ages without seeing more than a few people and a couple of dogs.

Gericke’s Point is the classic photo stop: a rocky outcrop that catches the swell and the late afternoon light.
