Best Hikes Near Wilderness: From Short Walks To All-Day Trails

Tucked between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Wilderness is one of the Garden Route’s most rewarding stops for anyone who likes to explore on foot. Whether you have an hour to stretch your legs or a full day to disappear into indigenous forest, the trails around this small town in South Africa deliver big scenery with surprisingly little effort. Here are three of our favourites, plus everything you need to know about directions and difficulty.

The Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail: The Classic Wilderness Hike

If you only do one hike in Wilderness, make it this one. The Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail starts at the Ebb-and-Flow rest camp area and follows the Touw River through dense riverine forest before climbing gently to a waterfall and natural pool. The full route to the waterfall is roughly 7 km return and takes most people two to three hours at a relaxed pace.

Difficulty: easy to moderate. The boardwalk sections make the going smooth, though there are a few short climbs and roots to watch. The reward at the end — a cool plunge pool under a cascading waterfall — is worth every step. Go early in the morning for the best chance of spotting the trail’s namesake kingfisher, plus Knysna louries and the occasional bushbuck.

Woodville Big Tree: A Short Walk With Giant Rewards

Not every great hike needs to be long. The Woodville Big Tree is an easy, mostly flat loop of about 2 km through old-growth forest, and it’s perfect for families, slow walkers, or anyone squeezing in a walk before breakfast. The star of the show is an enormous yellowwood estimated to be over 800 years old — you’ll feel tiny standing beneath it.

Difficulty: easy. The path is shaded, gentle, and well marked, making it a great option on a warm day. It’s also a wonderful spot for photographers and birders. If you’re based at WildFarm Backpackers, this is an ideal quick outing on your way to or from town.

Touw River Boardwalk: Flat, Scenic, And Accessible

The Touw River boardwalk is the most accessible trail in the area, running from the Ebb-and-Flow car park toward the river mouth and linking up with the Kingfisher Trail network. It’s flat, wheelchair- and pram-friendly in sections, and offers gorgeous views over the water where you can often see fish eagles, cormorants, and even otters if you’re lucky.

Difficulty: very easy. This is a walk, not a scramble — perfect for a sunset stroll or a lazy afternoon. Combine it with a swim at the beach at the river mouth for a perfect half-day out.

Where To Stay And How To Plan Your Hikes

All three trails sit within a few minutes’ drive of central Wilderness, and parking is available at the main trailheads. Bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent, and remember that forest paths can be slippery after rain. For live conditions, local tips, and trail updates, check in with WildernessLocals — they know these paths better than anyone.

If you’re looking for a base that’s a little different, our WildFarm homestead offers a taste of off-grid living just outside town, with fresh air, quiet nights, and easy access to every trail on this list. You can see what daily life looks like on the farm over at The Wild Farm on YouTube, watch beach and drone footage of the Garden Route at WildernessLocals on YouTube, and follow our solar, water, and building projects at Off-Grid Theo.

From a gentle boardwalk stroll to a full-day forest adventure, Wilderness really does have a trail for every fitness level. Lace up, take your time, and let the Garden Route do the rest.
