Wilderness is a peaceful town. Violent crime is rare, and most visitors spend their days swimming, hiking and driving scenic routes without a single problem. That said, we don’t pretend it’s a bubble. Opportunistic theft happens, especially with unattended belongings at beaches or in unlocked cars. The rule is simple: don’t leave valuables visible, lock your car, and keep phones and bags close when you’re on the sand. If you follow the same habits you’d use in any coastal town, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Beaches, Rivers and the Famous Night Drives
Wilderness Beach stretches for kilometres, and it’s one of the safest, most relaxed stretches of coastline on the Garden Route. Swim where other people are swimming, respect the lifeguards and never turn your back on the ocean. The Touw River mouth and the lakes are calmer for paddling and families.
The night drive along the N2 towards Knysna is genuinely spectacular, but it deserves respect. The road is dark, the bends are sharp, and wildlife does cross. Drive slowly, watch for pedestrians and animals, and never attempt it after a few drinks. Keep your plans simple. Don’t hike alone on remote trails, tell someone where you’re going, and carry a charged phone. Avoid walking alone on quiet roads after dark — use a taxi or drive. At the beach, take only what you need and leave nothing unattended. And talk to locals; we’re usually happy to tell you which roads are best at night and which spots to skip.
